Beau Dick is a native Canadian, or "first nation" person, of the Kwakwaka'wakw nation' living in the island of Vancouver. He is an "artist" not in the western sense of the word as his masks have ritual functions and are thus not "autonomous" art.
A number of his works are presented at the new Athens museum of contemporary art, as part of the Documenta 14 event. They will be there for a month or so, before fulfilling their original purpose by being sent on May 2017 back to Canada and burned as part of a "potlach" ceremony.
Meanwhile, this exhibit provided me with a magnificent selection of "heads". Enjoy.
